THE STORY

Modernizing Technology to Protect their Data

Shatterproof is a nonprofit that treats addiction like the chronic disease it is. They provide evidence-based resources for prevention, treatment, and recovery for everyone who needs support. But like many growing nonprofits, Shatterproof’s expansion was inhibited by outdated technology, antiquated systems, and inefficient processes.

Tim Kobosko, Shatterproof’s CIO, knew they needed a trusted technology partner to support their growth goals. Instead of hiring an in-house team, which would have been costly and slowed down their timeline, Shatterproof turned to SC&H’s Technology Advisory team, led by director Greg Tselikis.

“When Greg and the team arrived, the initial plan was to stabilize the environment and make sure the break-fix issues went away,” said Tim. “Then we wanted to standardize processes across the organization, like how we access the corporate applications and secure our data.”

Shatterproof worked remotely but didn’t have connected or secure systems. Our team saw a need for better technology to prepare Shatterproof’s team for national growth.

First, we assessed their IT environment–specifically security controls and cloud software solutions–to determine which existing pieces were still valuable. Then, we implemented the best technology to fill the gaps, allowing Shatterproof to operate effectively with a lean back-office IT function.

An updated IT and cybersecurity strategy enabled them to work safely and efficiently as a 100% remote team.

We also advised on back-office efficiencies, website functionality, and third-party vendors to resolve the break-fix issues and establish a secure environment.

Like many nonprofits, Shatterproof manages a massive quantity of data. It became apparent that they needed an enterprise-grade data solution, so we brought on the Data Solutions & Analytics team to modernize their system.

Providing Better Treatment Data, Faster

Shatterproof’s ATLAS platform was the primary focus for our Data Solutions & Analytics team, led by director Nick Scott. ATLAS is their proprietary treatment locator platform that helps patients find and compare addiction treatment programs. Shatterproof uses detailed metrics to evaluate the quality of care for each facility on the platform.

Shatterproof’s secret sauce is the quality care metrics of those treatment facilities,” said Tim. “At the root of that is data on the treatment facility.”

To be listed on ATLAS, facilities must complete a detailed survey to collect and verify information. The survey covers everything from available services and payment methods to childcare and transportation.

Originally, two Shatterproof employees had to manually validate and cross-check every answer, request additional information if needed, and then approve or reject updates to publish on ATLAS. This was so painfully time-consuming, they could only make changes twice a year. Meaning, treatment centers had to wait up to six months to get listed on ATLAS or have their updates published.

Shatterproof wanted to streamline this process so they could onboard more facilities, give patients more accurate information–and ultimately save more lives.

“A lot of what we strived to do was put in more sophisticated data pipelines and integrations to help Shatterproof’s resources focus more on their core mission, versus performing menial tasks behind the scenes,” said Nick.

Our team built an automated workflow and data warehouse that collected, verified, and cleansed the survey submissions daily. The new workflows automatically reported errors and even returned information to the facility for verification or rejection. This meant Shatterproof could add or update listings in as little as 24 hours.

Our work took the 6-month manual process and sped it up to an automated 24-hour process.

Shatterproof could now scale the ATLAS system with fewer resources and costs over time. This change helps people begin treatment as soon as they’re ready, often leading to more successful results.

Scaling to Save More Lives

In order to expand, Shatterproof needed to ensure their data–especially patient information–was safe, secure, and accurate. We acted as their strategic technology advisors and established stronger cybersecurity protocols to reduce risk and position them for growth.

“We became an extension of both the IT team at Shatterproof and the organization as a whole,” said Greg. “They brought us into many conversations across the organization that related to technology–just to be a sounding board–so that they could focus on the mission.”

With the support of our experienced IT leaders, they expanded into five other states, increasing their treatment guidance to 40% of the US population, and tripled the number of people using Shatterproof resources to find lifesaving treatment.

“Modernizing our technology allowed us to go from a mom-and-pop operation to an enterprise-level data schema,” said Tim. “It made a difference, and at the end of the day is helping us save lives, which is what Shatterproof is all about.”
